Guidewire Diameter Classification

The diameter of an interventional guidewire is usually expressed in inch or millimeter. Diameter is an important parameter when selecting a guidewire, as it can affect the maneuverability, support, and traversal of the guidewire within the vessel. The following are common guidewire diameter classifications:

  1. 0.010 inch (approximately 0.25 mm): guidewires of this diameter are commonly used for minimally invasive procedures such as minimally invasive neurological interventions and minimally invasive vascular interventions because they are thinner and can pass through smaller catheters or sheaths.
  1. 0.014 inch (approximately 0.36 millimeters): This is the most commonly used guidewire diameter and is widely used for cardiac and vascular interventions such as coronary stenting and other vascular disease treatments.
  1. 0.018 inch (approximately 0.46 mm): guidewires of this diameter are typically used for larger vessels, such as peripheral vascular interventions and other vascular disease treatments. They typically have better support but may be slightly less maneuverable.
  1. 0.035 inch (approximately 0.89 mm): This thicker guidewire is typically used for larger vessels and organs, such as aneurysm embolization, venous cannulation, and other large vessel procedures. 

There are also other sizes of guidewires, such as 0.012 inch (about 0.30 mm), 0.016 inch (about 0.41 mm), and 0.038 inch (about 0.97 mm). Depending on the needs of the procedure and the experience of the surgeon, guidewires of different diameters may be selected. When performing cardiac and vascular interventions, selecting the appropriate guidewire diameter is critical to achieving a successful procedure and minimizing complications.
