What is a central venous catheter?

Central venous catheterization is an interventional procedure and treatment using large veins of the body, such as the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava, which can be used to directly and rapidly infuse a large amount of fluids into the circulation, or for long-term intravenous nutrition or intravenous antibiotic treatment.

The main purpose of central venous catheterization is to monitor central venous pressure, to place intracardiac pacing catheter in emergency, to replenish water and electrolytes, to increase circulating blood volume, to improve microcirculation, to provide nutrients for the body, to maintain positive nitrogen balance, and at the same time, to infuse drugs and to treat diseases.

Central venous catheters can be roughly divided into the following four categories according to their different forms of placement: peripheral central venous catheter (PICC), percutaneous transluminal central venous catheter (CVC), port infusion (PORT), tunneled central venous catheter (CVTC).

A central venous catheter (CVC) is a system of intravascular indwelling catheters that are placed in large veins to create access between the outside world and the central vein.

The main difference between it and traditional infusion is that the choice of vessels is changed from the small peripheral vessels of the hands, feet, and forearms to the thicker veins of the femoral vein, jugular vein, subclavian vein, and elbow vein. The site where the infusion enters the body is also adjusted from the peripheral veins where the infusion needle is located directly to the central veins, such as the superior vena cava and femoral vein.
